    Fort Meade, Maryland is located in Anne Arundel County – a comfortable driving distance for work in Baltimore or for play at the ocean resorts.  Neighboring towns include Jessup, Gambrills, Crofton, Odenton, Laurel, Millersville and Severn, all within a five-mile radius.  Historic Annapolis is less than 20 miles away, offering boating and other water sports; world-class dining and nightlife; cultural experiences from art galleries to ballet, opera and symphony performances; and a host of shopping opportunities. 

    The popular Army base, Fort George G. Meade, has been in operation since 1917 and is still active today, employing both military personnel and civilian employees. Fort Meade provides support to partner organizations from all four services and several federal agencies, including the National Security Agency (NSA), the US Army Intelligence and Security Command, the US Environmental Protection Agency Center and the Army Field Band.

     The population and facilities at Fort George G. Meade have grown at a daunting rate over the late few years providing the military with almost every imaginable essential of the modern military workforce and their loved ones.  Fort Meade is effectively a metropolis in own character.  It consists of over 5,000 acres with approximately 1,300 buildings. Whatever your interests - crafts, sports, movies, all are available here.  As one of the largest recreation collectives in the country, with at least 15 different facilities, including the Gaffney Sports Arena, Fort Meade Museum, the Fort Meade Pavilion, Burba Park, Camp Meade RV Park, Murphy Field House, indoor/ outdoor pools, golf courses,  Mullins Stadium track, the Equestrian Center and “The Lanes Fort Meade” Bowling Center.  The base is also a short distance to such attractions as the National Air and Space Museum, the Kennedy Center, The National Aquarium, Baltimore Inner Harbor, The Baltimore Science Center, The Washington National Zoo and The White House and major sporting events, including football and baseball.

     

    Ft. Meade strives for solid community ties with amenities, pinnacle schools and family housing authorized for all ranks of military personnel, as well as service diversity and leisure.  Several public schools reside on base, with close by private schools.  The U.S. Army Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC) oversees base medical needs, while the five major personnel housing areas encompass more than 2800 sets of quarters. 

    The unemployment rate in Fort Meade is nearly a point lower than the average and consistently one of the lowest in the state.  Anne Arundel County is ranked as one of the top counties in Maryland with respect to job growth.  The area maintains a varied business base, ranging from high technology companies and wholesale distributors to the federal government.  Major employers include the 80 tenant organizations at Fort Meade, the state of Maryland, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Anne Arundel County Government, Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Northrop Grumman, the US Naval Academy and BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.

    The median house value in Fort Meade is significantly above the state average.  The Anne Arundel County public school system boasts seven National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence and 11 Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence, providing a challenging and rewarding educational experience for every child.  Students have ready access to the cultural and educational opportunities offered by the nearby cities of Baltimore and Washington, DC, as well as the rich history of Annapolis, the county seat of Anne Arundel County and the state capital of Maryland.

  • The History of Fort George G. Meade

    Fort Meade was founded in 1917 when the U.S. Department of War obtained 19,000 acres of land to develop a training camp. The Fort was named after General George Gordon Meade a prominent Civil War General for the Union Army.   George Meade is recognized for defeating General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
    Fort Meade was used as a basic training post and a prisoner of war camp during World War II. Fort George G. Meade has been home to the National Security Agency (NSA) since the 1950’s.The post was scheduled to close in the 1990s, but was kept open to support the NSA.

    Due to its location near D.C., it is increasingly being used by government and military tenants like the Defense Information School, the headquarters of the Defense Courier Service, the United States Army Field Band, and an United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) facility as well as the Department of Defense (DOD).

    Fort Meade is regarded as the nations Preeminent Center for Information and Intelligence.
